About Big Picture

Hillsboro Big Picture is a smaller, options program for high school students in the Hillsboro School District.

What makes us unique:

  • Leadership -  This is a required, year-long elective course for all grades. Students and teachers work together to build strong relationships through group games, community circles, community service, and event planning.
  • Community Meetings- students showcase their learning throughout the year. Each month, students rotate planning and leading a community meeting for all of HBP students and staff.
  • Career Exploration- students explore career pathways through career labs, field trips, and internship opportunities.
  • Community Service Learning- students participate in service learning projects on campus, in the garden, and in the community. Students will spend time every week outside- get ready to get your hands dirty!
  • Skill Building- all students participate in small groups, classroom guidance and whole school activities that promote skill building in the areas of academics, college/career readiness, and wellness.
  • Family Engagement- This includes regular on-track and attendance meetings. We monitor our students’ academic and attendance data and actively communicate with families for celebrations and to problem-solve barriers to success.

Other information:

  • We are part of the Oak Street Campus of alternative options in HSD.
  • Students attend school full-time and earn a high school diploma from their home high school.
  • We offer transportation and school meals.
  • Students can still participate in sports and activities of their home high school.
  • Students at Hillsboro Big Picture spend their school day in core content classes, elective classes (although a smaller selection than the larger high schools), a project-based class and career exploration.

Learning Community

Big Picture learning is student-centered, where students actively own and invest in their education. Students will be part of a small learning community supported and led by an advisor. They will work closely with real-world mentors as well as their parents and families to develop their passions.
